Winter is around the corner and can bring unpredictable driving conditions. The right tools are indispensable when hitting winter roads, so we’re sharing our top 10 winter driving must-haves! Ranging from the best snow scraper to snow and mirror covers, this list is perfect for stocking your vehicle up, or finding the perfect gift for friends and family!
10. Full Gas Tank
While we typically recommend drivers stick to the “quarter-tank rule” , increasing that to a half-tank is a good idea during the winter. Keeping your gas tank at least half full will help prevent the fuel line freezing. An increased level of fuel in the tank can prepare you for the chance of being delayed, or even stuck, due to winter driving conditions.
9. Winter Apps
There are several high-tech smartphone apps designed with winter driving in mind. These apps provide real-time weather updates, road condition reports, and even route planning optimized for winter conditions. Examples include Waze, The Weather Channel, and winter survival guides like "Winter Survival Kit." Remember the use of electronic devices while driving is a ticketable offense, so use these apps ahead of the drive – not during. Drivers who have their Class 7 Novice or Class 7 Learners need to keep their phone stored away, as they cannot use Bluetooth or hands-free devices during these licensing stages.
8. Phone Charger & Battery Bank
Phone chargers that can be plugged into your vehicle can be an invaluable resource if you become stuck in winter conditions or get rerouted due to road conditions or accidents. Depending on the year, make, and model of the vehicle, it may have a USB port or an auxiliary power outlet. Make sure whatever you have on-hand is compatible with the vehicle and your phone! In addition to charging your phone from the vehicle, having a battery bank tucked in the glovebox can also be a lifesaver. If your vehicle won’t start or dies, you don’t want to be reliant on it for charging your devices and a power bank can be the perfect solution.
7. Mirror Rain Covers
Side-view mirror rain covers are a handy accessory to prevent ice and frost from obstructing the side mirrors. These covers can be easily installed and removed, ensuring a clear view of the surroundings, even in the midst of winter weather.
6. Windshield Snow Cover
If you’re stuck without access to a garage or carport and must park outside, a windshield snow cover can save valuable time after you’ve been parked. These covers act as a protective shield, preventing frost and snow from accumulating directly onto the windshield. When you’re ready to hit the road, simply remove the cover and the windshield will be clear!
5. Rubber Floor Mats
Many vehicles already come equipped with floor mats, but if your vehicle has carpet mats you may want to consider swapping them out for rubber mats. R ubber or all-weather mats will prevent snow and salt from damaging the carpet mats, as well as the carpet that typically lines the floor of some vehicles. These mats can also be more durable and easier to clean, so whether you swap them out permanently or just for the winter season is up to you.
4. Snow Brush & Ice Scraper
A snow brush with a telescopic handle allows you to reach all areas of your vehicle, ensuring that snow is completely removed before you start driving. Snow brushes that come equipped with a built-in ice scraper are an efficient combination. A high-quality ice scraper is essential for clearing frost and ice from the windows. You can often find a snow brush and scraper combination tool that features a sturdy blade, quality bristles, and ergonomic handles.
3. Winter Roadside Kit
A winter roadside kit is essential for winter driving. Having a properly equipped roadside emergency kit could mean the difference between a long cold wait and a way to stay warm and get unstuck. We’ve already built the ultimate winter roadside kit and it includes “The Basics”, like a first aid kit and flashlight, “The BC Items”, like blankets and non-perishable foods, and “The Extras”, like a fire extinguisher and tarps. These supplies can make a world of difference in a variety of different situations that you may never encounter, but if you do you’ll be prepared!
2. Battery Jump Starter
Cold weather can be particularly harsh on car batteries. A portable battery jump starter can be a lifesaver if your battery dies on a frigid day. These compact devices are easy to use and can jump-start your car without the need for another vehicle. Many jump starters also include USB ports for charging devices, and air compressors for inflating tires.
1. Winter Tires
Investing in winter tires tops our list of winter driving must-haves! Winter tires provide enhanced grip on snow and ice, improving the vehicles’ ability to stop and react in challenging conditions. In British Columbia winter tires or snow chains are required on most routes from October 1 to April 30, so there’s still time to get yourself a set before it starts warming up!
