Buckle Up for Two: Tips for Pregnant Drivers

Congratulations on your pregnancy! As your belly grows, so does your to-do list, and errands inevitably involve getting behind the wheel. Now that you’re driving for two, it’s important to make sure you’re taking the proper precautions to stay safe and comfortable on the road throughout your pregnancy.

We’re here to equip you with the knowledge and tips you need to navigate the road with confidence as your body undergoes exciting changes.

British Columbia’s Laws and Your Safety

In BC there are no specific laws regarding driving while pregnant, however, the province enforces a seatbelt law that applies to all drivers and passengers. That means you absolutely must buckle up properly every time you get in the car. Seatbelt placement may change from what you’re normally used to, and will require some extra adjustments whenever you click in.

For optimal safety while pregnant, place the lap belt so it sits snugly below your belly, across your hips, and not on your stomach. The shoulder belt should fit comfortably across your chest and not slip down your arm. When sitting in the driver’s seat, you should move your seat back as far as you can while being able to safely and comfortably reach the pedals and steering wheel. This will provide an adequate amount of space between the airbag and baby, should any incidents occur. The same advice can be used when sitting in the passenger seat - move your seat back as far as you can.

Comfort is Key

While safety is paramount, don't underestimate the importance of comfort behind the wheel during pregnancy! Discomfort can quickly lead to a loss of focus and fatigue, impacting your reaction time and overall control of the vehicle. Constant fidgeting to find a comfortable position can also be distracting.

Start with your driving position. Adjust your seat so your legs have a comfortable bend at the knees, allowing you to easily reach and depress the pedals without straining. If your car allows, consider tilting the steering wheel slightly to create more space for your belly and find a new, comfortable arm position for optimal control. Consider investing in a lumbar support pillow to keep in the car. A decent pillow can help you maintain good posture as well as reduce back pain, which is common during pregnancy and can be exacerbated by driving.

If your comfort level is impacted strongly by the temperature, experiment and find a comfortable temperature setting for your car. Consider using a cooling seat pad or a light fabric seat cover during warmer months, and a cozy poncho or cardigan for chillier days.

Don't underestimate the power of staying hydrated! Dehydration can contribute to fatigue and headaches, further impacting your driving. Pack a reusable water bottle and take frequent sips.  You can also keep your energy levels up and avoid blood sugar crashes by keeping healthy snacks on hand. Avoid greasy or sugary options that might leave you feeling sluggish and instead opt for fresh fruits, nuts, or whole-grain crackers.

Adjusting Your Driving Habits

As your pregnancy progresses, you might experience some changes that can affect your driving. Be mindful of fatigue, reduced dexterity, and increased blind spots.

Fatigue is common in early pregnancy so make sure you’re well-rested before getting behind the wheel and take breaks on longer trips. Your growing belly might make it harder to turn the steering wheel or fasten your seatbelt so make sure to adjust your seat whenever you drive, ensuring you have maximum movement space for completing maneuvers. Blind spots may increase as your belly grows and you start sitting differently to increase comfort, so use your mirrors and shoulder check diligently, being extra cautious when changing lanes.

By following these tips and listening to your body, you can stay safe and comfortable on the road throughout your pregnancy.  Remember, a happy and healthy mama makes for a happy and healthy journey into parenthood.

"A special “Thank You” to you. From what I was told, you never let my daughter put her guard down. Good for you.

I appreciate all the hard work and dedication you’ve given to my daughter. I will recommend Valley Driving School to as many people as I can.

Again, “Thank You” to everyone. Who knows…maybe my daughter will be back for other types of drivers training ie: motorcycle, standard, or even semi-trucks. Could happen. She ‘loves’ to drive.

Best regards"
