Class 3 Driving Careers

A class 3 driver's licence opens doors to a diverse range of driving jobs in British Columbia, providing individuals with opportunities to build fulfilling careers in the transportation industry. A class 3 licence allows drivers to handle larger and more complex vehicles, making them essential to various sectors.

We’re exploring the diverse career paths available to class 3 drivers in BC, highlighting the skills, training, and qualifications needed for these in-demand roles.

Understanding Class 3 Driving

A class 3 driver's licence allows holders to operate a variety of large trucks and vehicles in British Columbia. These are typically defined as heavy trucks with two axles and air brakes, but without a trailer. Examples include fire engines, dump trucks, garbage and recycling trucks, and cement trucks. Possessing a class 3 licence demonstrates a driver's ability to safely and competently handle larger and more complex vehicles, making them ideal candidates for a variety of specialized driving roles.

Automatic and Standard Class 3 Driving

While obtaining a class 3 licence allows individuals to operate heavy trucks, it's important to understand the restrictions regarding standard and automatic transmissions. In British Columbia, the type of transmission you use for your class 3 road test determines the type of vehicle you are qualified to drive. If you take your road test in a vehicle with an automatic transmission, your licence will be restricted to driving only automatic vehicles. However, a class 3 standard licence, also known as a class 3 manual or class 3 unrestricted, allows you to drive both manual and automatic class 3 vehicles. It requires you to learn how to operate a manual transmission, which can take a little extra training, as well as pass a road test in a class 3 standard vehicle. Obtaining a class 3 standard licence would likely open up more job opportunities, as many employers prefer drivers who can operate both types of vehicles. Should you opt for the class 3 automatic licence and later decide to upgrade to a class 3 standard, you will need to go through the licensing process once again. This would entail going to ICBC and successfully completing a knowledge test, then obtaining a learner’s licence, and finally, successfully passing an ICBC class 3 road test in a vehicle with a manual transmission.

Top 4 Class 3 Driving Jobs

Firefighter

Firefighters play a vital role in emergency response, ensuring the swift and safe transportation of personnel, equipment, and large volumes of water to incident sites. They operate large and heavy class 3 vehicles equipped with air brakes. These vehicles are typically equipped with automatic transmissions, allowing for quicker and more efficient manoeuvring in challenging situations. Operating these vehicles requires professional driver training, which includes pre-trip inspections, safe operation, and navigating through traffic while responding to emergencies. This essential role often comes with competitive salaries, comprehensive benefits packages, and a high level of job security.

Dump Truck (No Trailer) Driver

Dump truck drivers operate class 3 vehicles to transport and dispose of various loose materials, primarily gravel and soil. These drivers can be found involved in a wide range of projects, from large-scale infrastructure developments like the widening of Highway 1 through the Fraser Valley, to smaller construction, landscaping, and road maintenance jobs. They ensure that materials are delivered safely and efficiently to job sites. They also work in conjunction with other vehicles and machinery, requiring skilled manoeuvring and spatial awareness. It’s important to note that dump trucks with a trailer attached are classified differently than dump trucks with no trailers - dump trucks with a trailer are a class 1 vehicle, not a class 3 vehicle.

Dump truck driving can offer competitive pay and the flexibility of contract work, particularly in regions with ongoing infrastructure projects.

Garbage/Recycling Truck Operator

Garbage and recycling truck operators have a leading role in maintaining clean and sustainable communities. In British Columbia, which boasts some of the most effective recycling and composting programs in the world, these drivers operate class 3 vehicles to collect, transport, and dispose of waste and recyclable materials. Many modern garbage trucks are equipped with automated receptacle lifting arms, while others may still rely on workers manually lifting household bins into the truck. This role requires skilled operation in residential areas, manoeuvring in tight spaces, and adhering to strict safety protocols. These roles often provide stable, long-term employment with competitive salaries and benefits, as these services are typically contracted by municipalities.

Cement Truck Driver

Cement truck drivers, also known as concrete mixer drivers, work mainly in the construction industry by transporting and delivering concrete to various job sites. They operate class 3 vehicles equipped with rotating drums that keep the concrete mixed and ready for use. Cement truck drivers are involved in a wide range of construction projects, from large-scale infrastructure developments like the Pattullo Bridge replacement and other major bridges and highways, to the construction of residential buildings, commercial properties, and everything in between. This role requires careful manoeuvring and precision to ensure that the concrete is delivered to the correct location and in optimal condition. These roles often offer competitive pay and benefits due to the specialized skills and knowledge required.

"A special “Thank You” to you. From what I was told, you never let my daughter put her guard down. Good for you.

I appreciate all the hard work and dedication you’ve given to my daughter. I will recommend Valley Driving School to as many people as I can.

Again, “Thank You” to everyone. Who knows…maybe my daughter will be back for other types of drivers training ie: motorcycle, standard, or even semi-trucks. Could happen. She ‘loves’ to drive.

Best regards"
