4 Tips for New Drivers

You've finally got your driver's licence - congratulations! The open road is full of exciting possibilities, and getting your licence is a freedom-enhancing experience like no other, and we’re here to help you get prepared and confident for every time you hit the road. Now that you have a shiny, new drivers licence, it's important to drive safely and responsibly while building your skills and gaining confidence on the road.

Our four top tips for new drivers will help you build a strong foundation, master essential road skills, develop a positive driving attitude, and become a more confident and skilled driver.

Tip #1: Build a Strong Foundation

Alright, new driver, let's build a solid foundation for your driving journey! It all starts with nailing the basics – steering, braking, and accelerating. Get comfortable with those in a safe space before hitting the open road. Knowing the traffic rules is a must, so brush up on those to avoid any unwanted surprises. Keep the strong foundation going by maintaining the vehicle that gets you around and understanding the capabilities of whatever vehicle you’re driving!

Regular check-ups like tire pressure, oil levels, and lights are super important to keep your ride running smoothly. Taking proactive and preventative measures when it comes to vehicle maintenance will help avoid any car mishaps while out on the road. Knowing the braking distance, acceleration rate, and handling limits will help you make informed decisions on the road. You should also take a few minutes before any drive, especially if you’re in a different vehicle, to familiarize yourself with your car's features and controls, including headlights, turn signals, windshield wipers, and mirrors.

When it comes to driving, you should always be on the lookout! Anticipate what other drivers might do and be ready to react. The more you practice these building blocks, the more confident and safe you'll feel behind the wheel.

Tip #2: Embrace Essential Road Skills

Now that you’ve got a strong foundation, let's talk about the basics of driving. First off, those mirrors are your best friends! Keep an eye on what's happening around you, and use them to spot potential hazards. Check your blind spots using shoulder checks to check for vehicles that may be hidden from your side mirrors.
Next up on the best friend list is your signals. Letting other drivers know your plans prevents misunderstandings and space conflicts, allowing you to make maneuvers in peace and with confidence. Use clear and timely signals to indicate your intentions when changing lanes or turning.

Whenever you’re behind the wheel, give yourself some breathing room by leaving a decent gap between you and the car in front. By giving yourself some extra space, you will have an exit strategy if needed, as well as room to move into if a vehicle behind you is encroaching on your space. You never know when someone might slam on their brakes in front of you, and you will be grateful for every extra inch!
Additionally, be aware of your surroundings and anticipate potential hazards. Look ahead for stopped vehicles, pedestrians, or animals that may cross your path. By staying alert and scanning the road ahead, you can react more quickly to unexpected situations.

Tip #3: Have a Positive Mindset and Attitude

Your mindset and attitude play a significant role in your driving experience. Staying focused on the road is essential, so avoid distractions like phones and loud music. Patience is key, especially during rush hour. Practice relaxation techniques to manage stress behind the wheel, as stress can impair your judgment. Showing courtesy to other drivers and pedestrians creates a safer driving environment for everyone. Go into every drive knowing that everyone makes mistakes, and what’s important is to learn from them and use them as opportunities to improve your driving skills.

To further reduce potential stress, plan your trips in advance. Allow extra time to reach your destination, especially during peak traffic hours. This will help you feel more relaxed and in control. By anticipating potential traffic congestion or unexpected delays, you can adjust your departure time accordingly.

Having a positive attitude doesn’t mean ignoring the potential for something to go wrong! Make sure you have the essentials available in case of emergencies. These essentials could include roadside assistance information, a first aid kit, jumper cables, a snow brush, and anything else you would need if faced with an unexpected issue. Knowing that you’re prepared for anything can make driving a more relaxed experience!

Tip #4: Be More Than An Average Driver

Ready to level up your driving game? If you’ve confidently built a strong foundation, embraced the essential driving skills, and have kept your mindset and attitude positive, it’s time to try out something new!

Nighttime driving can be tricky, so practice when you can. Adjust your headlights, use low beams wisely, and be extra cautious of pedestrians and animals. Freeways can be intimidating, but with a little practice, you'll be cruising in no time. Learn how to merge smoothly, change lanes confidently, and maintain a steady speed. Parallel parking might seem impossible, but it's a skill worth mastering. Practice in empty parking lots until you get the hang of it. Keep a basic toolkit in your car and learn how to change a tire because, while flat tires and breakdowns are never fun, knowing ahead of time what to do can save the day!

Becoming a confident and safe driver takes time, practice, and a dedicated approach. By following these tips and consistently applying them to your driving experience, you'll be well on your way to becoming a skilled and responsible driver. Every journey begins with a single step, and every mile driven is an opportunity to learn and grow. Enjoy the road, stay safe, and happy driving!

"A special “Thank You” to you. From what I was told, you never let my daughter put her guard down. Good for you.

I appreciate all the hard work and dedication you’ve given to my daughter. I will recommend Valley Driving School to as many people as I can.

Again, “Thank You” to everyone. Who knows…maybe my daughter will be back for other types of drivers training ie: motorcycle, standard, or even semi-trucks. Could happen. She ‘loves’ to drive.

Best regards"
